Harman Kardon A500 Vintage Integrated Tube Stereo Amplifier. I acquired this amplifier from a friend of mine about 30 years ago. It was my primary stereo for 20 years until we moved 10 years ago at which time it was boxed up and set on a shelf until last week when I pulled it out to test for listing. When I turned it on I remembered why I loved this amp so much. The problem is, I will not have room in the place we are now moving to, consequently it is up for sale. I just dusted it off, cleaned the pots and switches with contact cleaner, tested all the tubes and sat and listened to it for a while. This is a great sounding powerful stereo amplifier with lots of unique features including the blending feature allowing you to blend the two separate stereo channels to a specific blending of your choice while monitoring the amount of blend with the indicator lamps. It also has a volume potentiometer controlled low level signal out for a center channel if desired. A very cool not so common feature for a stereo amplifier of this era. This is a very well built piece of equipment with massive transformers and lots of shielding. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS from Owners Manual: Two 7355 tubes per channel, self-biased, tetrode connected in Class AB1 operation. On preamplier and voltage amplifier laments. 25 watts per channel. 20 watts per channel at less than 0.5% distortion. 5watts at less than 0.2% distortion. 50 watts per channel. Even the multi-section electrolytic filter capacitor (the tubular aluminum can visible on top of chassis) is brand new. This console Maggie has been modified to be a stand alone, fully integrated audio amplifier. It not only includes the original 9302 power amp, but the original Magnavox pre-amp as well, with all the associated controls, including volume. It has been thoroughly tested to ensure that all operating parameters are within proper specifications. All tubes are either brand new, or new old stock (NOS) and test accordingly. As is usually the case, the console’s pre-amp and tone controls (including the volume), were located inside the tuner chassis, not the amplifier chassis. Nlike most typical console amplifier restorations, this 9302 has been reunited with it’s matching pre-amp circuit formally located in the tuner. Since the original Maggie 9302 chassis is oversized and already had an empty tube socket hole labeled “6EU7″ (for use in other equipment that Magnavox manufactured), the extra pre-amp tube, controls and circuitry, were easily accommodated. It’s all “under the hood” of this now fully integrated, high fidelity, stereo tube amplifier. This beautiful Maggie is plug and play and ready to go. Just connect the speakers of your choice. The 9302 was designed for 4 ohm speakers, but works very well with a pair of 8 ohm, high efficiency speakers (above 90dB), like Klipsch, or even a quad set of 8 ohm speakers where each pair is connected in parallel (4 ohms total) to each stereo channel. This fully integrated Magnavox 9302 not only sounds great, but it looks great too. A front panel plate and bottom panel have also been custom fabricated. All controls use a standard 1/4 diameter shaft, so you can inexpensively change the knobs to whatever style you like. The professional restoration of this Magnavox 9302 includes the following repairs, upgrades and modifications. Remove 12 pin molex connector (umbilical connection to console tuner). Rewire power supply circuit to allow amplifier to operate as a stand alone unit. “Across the line” filter capacitor replaced with 2 new Y2X1 safety capacitors. Modified chassis to remove unused terminals and accommodate new switches, connectors and controls. Grounded 3 prong IEC connector installed at rear of chassis (3 wire grounded power cord is provided). Line fuse holder installed (2A slow blow) at rear of chassis. Install green neon pilot lamp at front panel of chassis. Eight (4 pairs) gold, rear panel mount, RCA audio input connectors mounted at rear of chassis. Four (2 pairs) gold, 5 way, speaker binding posts mounted at rear of chassis. Added a third 9 pin tube socket (for pre-amp tube) into pre-existing empty hole in chassis. Replaced one existing 9 pin tube socket. Integrated entire 6EU7 pre-amp circuit from console tuner, including. 6EU7 pre-amp tube. Volume control mounted to front panel of chassis (with K4 tone compensation circuit). Treble control mounted to front panel of chassis. (with K5 tone compensation circuit). Bass control mounted to front panel of chassis. (with K6 tone compensation circuit). Installed illuminated power switch on top of chassis. Installed a 4 position rotary selector switch mounted to front panel of chassis. Replaced multi-section electrolytic capacitor can with brand new CE Manufacturing Mallory FP type can. Install F & T multi-section tone capacitor into new pre-amp circuit. Replaced all paper capacitors with metal film tone capacitors. Tested all resistors and replaced any that were out of tolerance. Rewire as needed to create a fully integrated, multi-input amplifier. Fabricate wooden side boards and secure to chassis. Fabricate custom face plate and secure to front panel. Mount left and right stainless steel side rails, using four (4) threaded rods. Fabricate and Install chassis bottom, securing with four (4) stainless steel feet (1 standoff). Trim potentiometer shafts and mount new control knobs on all controls. Replace all eight (8) vacuum tubes. (1) 5U4GB rectifier tube (NOS American made). (3) 6EU7 amplifier tubes (NOS American made). (4) 6BQ5/EL84 beam power tubes (brand new, quad matched Sovtek). This Maggie is a rare beauty that doesn’t come up for sale very often. Don’t let it get away. A lot of man hours have gone into this amplifier and everything used in the restoration is of the highest quality. A schematic diagram will be provided. Front panel, dial and buttons excellent. Chassis clean , but with residual indelible stains, vintage appearance. POWER SUPPLY:Upgraded with new heavy duty soft-fast recovery diodes and new bias rectifier bridge, and bias electrolytic caps. Upgraded critical resistors to spec voltages, Bias adjusted to -19 vdc. Normal residual ripples within specs. Current in-rush limiter enclosed. Line suppression safety caps replaced. Filter electrolitics reformed to spec, no residual ripples. FM & IF Stages: FISHER tubes selected for spec Gm, long life, no gas or micro-phonics. Tube specs in folder with manuals. All small electrolitics replaced with modern high quality components. This was followed by a fine fm &if alignment with high quality laboratory equipment , resulting in high sensitivity: 1.4 uV in the -20 dB quieting test, better than spec. Signal strength in meter is 4.5/5 with simple fm antennae. MULTIPLEX DECODER:New Tung-sol 12AX7′s tubes. Audio path capacitors replaced as well as the electrolytic cap. The decoder stage was fine-tuned with a Fisher 300 multiplex generator (specially designed to service this stage) obtaining an excellent overall separation of 35 dB. AUDIO STAGE: New Tung-Sol 12ax7 tubes. NEW matched quad of Tung-sol 7591 Power Tubes, matched by trans-conductance and idle current. All small electrolytic, mustard caps and some ceramic disc replaced with high quality caps. Loudness and filter networks recapped. Coupling caps replaced with PIO (paper in oil) and orange drop caps. Audio caps replaced with polypropylene Power grids upgrade installed. Results: Excellent sine, square and triangular signal output. NO hum, dead silent receiver & amp. Max total audio pwr 78 wt rms, Rt&lft ch max pwr 39 wts. Total Harmonic distortion (THD)plus noise measured at rt ch=0.1%, lft ch 0.1%. Frequency response +/- 1 dB 20 hz to 20 khz both ch. IMD plus noise(inter-modulation distortion) 0.2%. All actual post restoration measurements. End result:A huge sound stage, depth and brilliance , full punchy bass, great separation and a to die -for warm and tactile mid range, and sparkling lush highs, finally tested with hours of awesome Fisher sound.
