Vintage Tube Amp

For sale: one vintage Altec 129A tube amplifier. This amplifier features Peerless input, output and power transformers: models 4665, 16441 and 6302, respectively. The 4665 input transformer (a K-241D mounted on an octal tube base) in particular is highly sought after, considered a “holy grail” among vintage audio transformers. The amplifier itself is in so-so condition. A few wires inside the chassis have been cut, volume knob is frozen in place, lamp missing, etc. The transformers all test good, however, no shorts. The plastic key on the 4665 transformer octal base is broken, but still visible to ensure proper orientation. Amplifier was briefly powered on and tested for operating voltages, B+ and filament voltages successfully detected. No further testing was performed. Up for sale, a 1982 Marshall JCM800 4104 2×12 tube amplifier in excellent condition and in good working order. This early vertical input JCM800 head shares many similarities to the earlier JMP and can deliver the thick crunch, sizzle, and power for which the 800 series is known. Fully serviced by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and biased to perfection with a pair of EL34s, this Marshall is ready for stage and studio use. The circuit is very original, with stock Drake transformers that date to 1982. A few new Sprague Orange Drop caps have been installed in the preamp alongside the original Wimas, keeping everything operating within original factory spec. The filter caps have been replaced as well, and the low gain input has been modded (a Plexi mod if you will) to give it a hotter signal. As such, the high gain input has been mellowed out just slightly given the increased gain to the low input. The amp is loaded with the original pair of 25 watt Celestion G12M Greenbacks, both of which have clean frames and original cones. The amp retains the original molded plastic feet, corners, knobs, and handle caps, as well as the large “Marshall” logo and piping on the black grillcloth. The original black tolex shows its fair share of nicks and tears (particularly on the bottom of the enclosure), but has survived the last 35 years in style and would look great on stage or in the studio.
