Up for sale, a 1967 Fender Twin Reverb in excellent condition and in perfect working order. One of the last amps from’67 to retain the Blackface AB763 circuit, this amp has been thoroughly serviced in-house here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and is studio ready. The very original’67 chassis has been matched with a vintage pair of Jensen C12N speakers and a new Mojotone solid pine speaker cabinet with new smooth blonde tolex and gold sparkle grillcloth, reminiscent of Fender’s transitional’64 specs. The tone is full on Blackface power and sparkle with rich cleans that exemplify the kind of clarity and sweetness for which the AB763 circuit is known. The reverb has a particularly lush sound and strong decay, while the tremolo throbs with the best. A perfect platform for pedals and ideal for amplifying everything from a guitar or pedal steel to your favorite Fender Rhodes or vintage combo organ, this Twin Reverb is dialed in to sound its best. The circuit is very original, retaining all of the stock transformers with 1967 date codes, and the CTS pots date to late’67 as well. The preamp has been thoroughly serviced with new Sprague Orange Drop tone caps and smaller bypass caps, and the power amp has been freshly recapped as well to ensure stable, reliable use. The speakers are a matched pair of Jensen C12Ns from early’68. Both of these speakers have been freshly reconed and sound great with tight, focused tone and plenty of power. Cosmetically, this amp is near mint as one would expect, given the brand new tolex and grillcloth on the new Mojotone speaker cab. The faceplate is a new reissue Blackface-style plate paired with all of the original witch hat knobs. The chassis straps are original, while the corners and sphinx glides (feet) are modern. Up for sale, a 1960 Gretsch Electromatic Twin Model 6161 amplifier in excellent condition and in good working order. Virtually identical to the famed Gretsch “Roundup” amplifier and the National branded “Trem-o-Tone” except for the cosmetics, this USA-made Gretsch amp was produced, like every vintage Gretsch amp, by the Valco company in Chicago (home of Supro, National, Airline and more). For sweet tube saturated overdrive, you simply can’t beat these early Valco circuits. Tube rectified with a pair of 6973 power tubes and approximate 15 watt output, the preamp has a focused, midrange rich quality that is articulate, dynamic and just plain fun to play. With dual 6×11″ speakers and an original tweeter, the voicing is different than any amp with a standard 10″ or 12 speaker compliment and this amp is the perfect secret weapon for you studio! The circuit is a true representation of point-to-point wiring, with original solder joints and a partial recap to keep the amp running within original factory spec. The circuit is otherwise stock and untouched, with 6973 power tubes, paired with a trio of 12AX7 preamp tubes. The Rola 6×11 speakers sound great with their original cones and have clean’60 date stamps on the frames. The power cable has been upgraded to the modern three-prong variety. The original deep navy blue covering on the cabinet is in great shape, with stock white piping and even the original “Gretsch” logo still on the grillcloth. The small Valco serial number plaque is present, along with only light aging on the control panel and original knobs. I believe everything in this amplifier, output transformer – reverb transformer – choke – power transformer, are original. Except for a few caps, resistors and tubes. When this amp walked through the door here at Tone House we knew it was something special from the second we flipped the standby switch. The “Twin” has been part of some of rock and rolls most notable moments including The Beatles final rooftop performance as well as being a sidekick to SRV during his’85 Japan tour and beyond. With so much new technology in the amp and guitar world it is nice to plug into this iconic vintage Twin and remind ourselves why we fell in love with gear in the first place! Era of Fender amplifiers from 1963 to 1967, the amps had black faceplates, black tolex covering on the cabinet, and neutral to slightly amber tinted silver sparkle grill cloth with a small ribbed rectangular pattern. The Twin now had an onboard spring reverb. Tank and was renamed the Twin Reverb. The Fender Twin Reverb is considered a standard model for players seeking a clean sound, and it is especially known for the quality of its built-in spring reverb. This 1967 Fender Twin Reverb is showing some cosmetic wear due to its age. Parts of the tolex have been torn and there is a 14 piece missing from the bottom edge on the back that is exposing part of the wooden chassis. The baffle has some fraying and tears. It has JBL’s in it currently with JJ tubes so it sounds just about as loud and clean as you would want from a twin. Obviously takes pedals really well – offers a really clear amplification of your sound without adding much coloration or break up. It is the second year that fender included a master volume control (with a push pull pot) so you can get preamp overdrive at low volumes though you will need to crank it to get the output tubes working. It comes with the foot-switch for verb/trem – which is fully functional. The tremolo is a little on the weaker side but that can be easily solved with a new trem tube – i rarely used it as the clean channel sounds so good and its the sound of a twin that I was after. This amp is in really good condition – it was recently serviced by Bob at Upstairs Amps in the Bay Area and I just cleaned out the output tube sockets myself. It is absolutely the sound of California rock n’ roll – if you’re after that clean twangy clear electric guitar tone of buffalo springfield, neil, the byrds, mamas and papas, early dead, etc… This amp will get you there. I’m super bummed to part with it but it is a little too big/heavy/loud for what I need at the moment. Let me know if you have any questions.
