I picked this amp up used. I had my friend test it. He attached a microphone to it and both channels worked. We didn’t have a guitar to connect to it. All the tubes light up. The little light on the front panel doesn’t come on. It may just be the bulb. It has some cosmetic wear from normal use (see photos). I don’t know what year this was made. Up for sale, a 1959 Fender Princeton in excellent condition and in perfect working order. With its narrow panel configuration, this Princeton is considered the “big box” version, with a cab that’s far larger than the single 8 alnico speaker requires, and the resulting sound is deceptively round and rich for the relatively small speaker size. The circuit couldn’t be more simple and pure, with single Volume and Tone knobs and a Class A circuit design, powered by a single 6V6 power tube. The tone is articulate, dynamic and commanding, with the sizzle and churning overdrive of a Champ, but with more tonal range and fuller low end. The top end response is just right, and the amp doesn’t get too trebly, making the tone control quite usable for dialing in exactly as much zing and snap as you desire. The circuit is very original and serviced as necessary for optimal functionality, retaining the original transformer pair, with a Schumacher power transformer that dates to the 49th week of’59. The original Stackpole pots, carbon comp resistors, and a couple blue Ajax capacitors are intact, with the pots dating to the 52nd week of 1959. The power supply caps and smaller electrolytics have been replaced with high quality modern Samwha and Sprague caps. The tubes are all vintage valves with a Bogen-branded USA-made 6V6, and RCA-made 5Y3 rectifier and 12AX7 tubes. The speaker is an era-correct Oxford 8 driver which has been professionally reconed, with a very clean gray frame and wiring harness with RCA end. The tube chart is intact inside the cabinet. There is notable ambering of the original tweed, with a few bald corners and modest scuffing on the enclosure edges. The faceplate is quite clean, with the majority of the white silkscreened text, shiny chrome, and a pair of original chicken head knobs. Up for sale, a 1965 Fender Princeton Reverb in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original two-button footswitch. A clean and early Blackface example with a Fender Electrical Instrument Co. Faceplate and no-logo cabinet, the Princeton Reverb is the perfect amplifier for small club gigs and studio sessions, delivering both well-balanced, sparkling cleans and smooth, harmonic rich overdrive at higher volumes. The Reverb is extremely lush and the Tremolo has a nice pulse with a wide range of speeds. The chassis retains all of the original Schumacher-made transformers (Fender’s primary transformer supplier in the Blackface era), with date codes from the 2nd to 28th weeks of’65. Aside from a modern three-prong power cable and new bias capacitor, the circuit is virtually untouched, boasting all of the famed blue molded Ajax tone caps which are an essential part of the sweet and musical character of Fender’s Blackface preamps. The original CTS pots are all intact as well, with visible date codes from late 1964. The power tubes are a pair of matched Groove Tubes 6V6s, and the preamp tubes are all matched Groove Tubes valves as well. The faceplate is clean, with the Fender Electric Instrument Co. Text that would disappear mid-year with Fender’s CBS buyout. The knobs are mostly original as well, with two slightly newer knobs for the tremolo controls. The original Oxford 10J4 ceramic magnet speaker is intact, with a clean black frame, Fender blue foil sticker on the magnet, and date stamp on the frame from the 15th week of’65. The tube chart is completely intact and quite clean too, with a “OH” date stamp which translates to August of’65. As the photos show, the original black tolex has weathered the decades well, with only a few very minor nicks and scuffs and wear on the two front bottom corners. The amp has a brand new birch ply baffle, replacing the original MDF, and this new baffle has been fitted with genuine’60s Fender silver sparkle grillcloth. All of the original hardware is present including the chassis straps, handle caps, and sphinx glides. The original two-button footswitch is included. With its narrow panel configuration, this Princeton is considered the “big box” version, with a cab that’s far larger than the single 8 alnico speaker requires, and the resulting sound is deceptively round and rich for the relatively small speaker size. The circuit couldn’t be more simple and pure, with single Volume and Tone knobs and a Class A circuit design, powered by a single 6V6 power tube. The tone is articulate, dynamic and commanding, with the sizzle and churning overdrive of a Champ, but with more tonal range and fuller low end. The tube chart is notable for its well-preserved condition, with perfect corners, handwritten serial number, and “GG” date stamp which translates to July of 1957. There is barely any ambering of the original tweed, with only a few minor scuffs on the bottom corners. The faceplate is extremely clean, with all of the white silkscreened font, shiny chrome, and a pair of original chicken head knobs. This amp is a true rarity given its condition, and this particular example has been carefully tested and inspected to ensure originality and ideal functionality. The original brown canvas Victoria Luggage cover is included. The cover has some loose stitching and isolated spots of missing trim, but still presents well. Complete with the original Victoria Luggage canvas cover, this amp is a remarkable find with well-preserved tweed. Actually a pairing of two different tweed-era Princetons, the exceedingly clean cabinet with original lacquered tweed, leather handle, logo, oxblood grill, and tube chart dates to 1956, while the chassis itself has components dating from late 1959-early 60. The circuit couldn’t be more simple and pure, with single Volume and Tone knobs and a Class A circuit design, powered by a single 6V6 power tube. The tone is articulate, dynamic and commanding, with the sizzle and churning overdrive of a Champ, but with more tonal range and fuller low end. The power tube and 5Y3 rectifier are both Sylvania valves, while the single 12AX7 in the preamp was manufactured by Tung Sol. The original two-prong gray power cable has been upgraded to a black, grounded three-prong. The speaker has a very clean gray frame, original cone, and stock cloth wiring harness with RCA end. The tube chart is notable for its well-preserved condition, with perfect corners and clearly written serial number. There is light ambering of the tweed, with a few exceedingly minor marks and scuffs, and wear mostly relegated to the bottom corners of the enclosure. On the bottom, there is some staining from the rubber feet in a ring around the sphinx glides. The faceplate is very clean, with all of the white silkscreened font, shiny chrome, and a pair of original chicken head knobs. This amp is a true rarity, given its condition, and this particular example has been carefully tested and inspected to ensure originality and ideal functionality. Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Princeton in exceptional, collector-grade condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original catalog, schematic, and envelope. Remarkably preserved, this vintage Blackface Fender was produced in mid-64, placing this Princeton firmly in the “Pre-CBS” era. The amp has both the early no-logo cabinet design and “Fender Electric Instruments” faceplate. Unlike its brother the Princeton Reverb, this non-reverb Princeton has much more clean headroom, as the lack of the reverb effect introduces less gain into the circuit, allowing the amp to be clearer and punchier, with a sound that has sparkle and chime indicative of the Blackface line and perfect for recording situations. The controls are simple and intuitive, and the bias-based tremolo circuit has a nice even pulse with a wide range of available speeds. The circuit is 100% original aside from a few new low-noise metal film resistors to ensure optimal performance and an ideal noise floor. The stock transformers were made by Fender’s primary supplier, Schumacher, dating between the 39th and 45th weeks of’64. The famed blue molded Ajax tone caps are intact in the preamp, instrumental in creating the sweet, musical character of Fender’s Blackface amps. The chassis stamp dates to’64, and the visible date codes on the stock Stackpole pots are from the 34th week of that year as well. The tubes consist of a matched pair of vintage RCA-branded 6V6 power tubes, with an Amperex GZ34 rectifier, RCA-branded 12AX7 and a singular new JJ preamp tube. The tube chart is fully intact with crisp corners and a “NL” date stamp that translates to December of’64. Typically the tube chart date is the latest on any Fender, which is true in this instance as well. The speaker is the original Jensen C10Q which is practically perfect with a deep black frame, near mint gold foil sticker on the magnet, and date stamp from the 23rd week of’64. The stock wiring harness is intact too with the bare metal 1/4 pancake jack seen only on Pre-CBS examples. The hardware on the amp is completely original and the faceplate is nigh flawless, with stock witch hat knobs. The stock black tolex and silver sparkle grill are among the cleanest we’ve ever encountered, and both are clean as can be. This is a pristine, no-excuses early Blackface Princeton which delivers a sound worthy of the Blackface name! The original factory paperwork is included including the original envelope, catalog, and schematic.
