McIntosh MC240 Vintage Tube Amp SkyFi Restored withPremium Vintage Tubes

McIntosh MC240 Vintage Tube Amp – SkyFi Restored w/Premium Vintage Tubes. General: We painstakingly restored this classic and coveted stereo tube amplifier to its full glory. Internally we replaced every critical component while carefully maintaining the original sonic quality. This listing also includes a rare and correct McIntosh tube cover (tube cage). SkyFi Restoration Notes: This MC240 underwent an extensive electronic restoration in house. The electronic work included a full rebuild of the power supply using custom made multi-section capacitors that match the exact values and layout of the original power supply. The bias supply was also rebuilt with new parts. The selenium bias diode was swapped to silicon with proper adjustment resistor to maintain the ideal bias level for the unity coupled output section. We also replaced all of the paper and di-film capacitors in the signal path after finding them leaky and drifted. During the signal path capacitor replacement we checked all of the resistors and replaced any parts that had drifted out of tolerance. By default we replace the phase inverter balancing resistors and plate load resistors with precision metal film parts to ensure trouble free performance. To finish up, we replaced the power cord and inrush current thermistor. Tube Notes: This amplifier is fitted with a set of premium vintage tubes. The output tubes are RCA 6L6 (2) are labeled McIntosh at the base. All four are RCA made tubes. The two labeled RCA have brown colored getter flashes but still test strong and sound great! The 12BH7 are strong matched and balanced GE. The remaining tubes are all strong testing authentic Telefunken 12AX7 and 12AU7. Cosmetic Notes: This MC240 was well loved. It has moderate chrome pitting and light silkscreen wear which is common for McIntosh amplifiers from this era. There are also some scratches/markings on the black transformer covers and cage. Two historic Dave O’Brian clinic stickers flank the McIntosh 240 badge and show years 1971 and 1972. The company was founded in 1949 by Frank McIntosh. The company designs and produces audio amplifiers, stereo tuners and other consumer electronics products. Ownership: Unknown Connections: RCA Inputs, Screw Terminal Outputs General Sound: Smooth, uncolored, undistorted natural and clean Cosmetic Condition: 6 / 10 Working Condition: Working perfectly and tested in our lab and listening room. Included: Unit, power cord, manual, and tube cage. Packing: Will be packed using our highly developed in-house process and custom packing materials. Specs: Power output: 40 watts per channel into 8? (stereo), 80 watts into 2? (mono) Frequency response: 16Hz to 40kHz Total harmonic distortion: 0.5% Input sensitivity: 0.5V Signal to noise ratio: 90dB Speaker load impedance: 4? Tube complement: 1 x 12AX7, 2 x 12AU7, 2 x 12BH7, 2 x 12AX7, 4 x 6L6GC Dimensions: 17-1/4″ x 10-3/4″ x 8 Weight: 56 lbs. Testing Process: The SkyFi Testing Process for Tube Amplifiers: We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure that there are no signs of heat stress or damage. Capacitors are checked for telltale signs of predictive failure including bulging, shrunken wrappers, or physical leakage. We also inspect resistors and other passive components for signs of overheating. If tube arcing has occurred in the past we can usually spot discoloration on the output tube sockets. On vintage units we often spot check select capacitors for value and ESR. If the amplifier passes visual inspection, we move on to a full test of all of the tubes. We use an Amplitrex AT-1000 Tube Tester which is capable of testing both emission and Gm with a high degree of accuracy. We document the results of each tube and replace any weak or suspect tubes before proceeding. When we power on tube amplifiers for the first time we usually use a variac and current limited AC supply and slowly raise the voltage up to nominal mains level while monitoring plate, screen, filament, and negative bias supply voltages where applicable. If everything is in order we feed a low level test signal into the amplifier’s input and monitor its output on an oscilloscope across an 8 ohm dummy load. At this point we are just looking to verify basic function and confirm that the output transformers are not damaged. Once we have verified that the amplifier is safe to operate, we connected it to full mains power. For cathode biased amps we monitor the plate to cathode voltage to determine if the output tubes are operating in a safe range. Once the output section is verified we move onto bench evaluation. We start by feeding the input of the amplifier with a low level 1KHz test signal, slowly increase its amplitude while monitoring the amplifier’s output on an oscilloscope for signs of noise, clipping, distortion, or improper channel balance. We continue increasing the signal level until the amplifier reaches clipping. At this point we take an output power measurement and compare it to the spec sheet of the amplifier to verify proper performance. We finish off the bench evaluation with a 1KHz square wave check and a 20Hz to 20KHz sine sweep to assess the amplifier’s frequency response characteristics. This battery of tests will usually reveal if the amplifier has any issues that need further attention. Before the device leaves the bench, we perform a listening test with actual music using a variety of preferred test tracks. Our benches are outfitted with familiar monitor speakers which help us identify inconsistencies that will not always show up on our test gear. The main things that we are listening for are hum or noise with no signal present, proper center image, clicks, pops, or any other obvious undesirable audio characteristics. If the unit passes all of these tests it is moved to our long term testing rig where we simulate real word operating conditions for 6-8 hours. For tube amps we like to run this test at least twice. This allows us to monitor the unit for signs of thermal runaway or intermittent issues that only crop up when it has fully come up to temperature. We find this step to be essential, especially for vintage units. Please note we are not a repair shop and only restore what we own. SkyFi Audio – Curators of Vintage Audio Gear. Eico HF87 Tube Amplifier newly serviced & restored! If you’re checking this out, chances are you already know about this amp- sounds incredible, extremely rare, and hard to find in good condition. Kills me to have to sell this, but here we are. Hope it goes to a good home! This unit is working and in great condition. It has just been professionally serviced and restored- as in a month and a half ago! All new and matching J&J EL34 tubes (see full list of new and replaced parts on the invoice). The only minor cosmetic damage is the obnoxious circle cut out in the exterior cage (see photo). The original owner made a bad decision to install a filter cap that doesn’t fit (it’s since been replaced). Reach out if you have any specific questions, thanks!

Marantz Model 8b Stereo Vintage Tube Amplifier Fully Restored

Marantz Model 8b Stereo Vintage Tube Amplifier Fully Restored. For your consideration, we have the venerable Marantz Model 8b Stereo Tube Amplifier. This unit came to us in working condition, and was pretty much all stock, aside from a screen grid resistor that had been replaced. The selenium rectifier was also still in place. While we know that some collectors prefer to leave these units completely original, you must keep in mind that this amp was manufactured in the 1960′s, so we prefer, in part for safety reasons, to go through and selectively restore them using modern components. All parts that were carefully removed, have been saved and will be included in the sale. They could be reinstalled if one would choose to do so. While the outside of the unit has some scratches and blemishes, it still presents itself very well. Inside the unit is very clean. The unit comes with a set of 4 Electro Harmonix EL34′s, 2 GE 6GC7′s, and 2 Motorola 6BH6′s. All tubes tested well on our Amplitrex AT1000 tube tester. After we restored the unit, I took it home for about two months and ran it in a modest system in my living room. I really enjoyed having it and replaced it with another 8b that we also recently restored. I don’t know if I will be able to let the second one go as I really fell in love with the 8b. These vintage amps were manufactured when street voltage was lower than todays. While not required, we prefer to run them through a variac set to 117 volts. This unit is highly collectable, but it also needs to be used and enjoyed. It is set up for another 60 years of faithful service. While we service most of the units that we sell, we were fortunate to have the extremely talented Ben Hase of Novalux Stereophonic do the work on this highly collectable unit. Ben is very experienced, talented, and extremely intelligent. Anyone who is able to get a piece of gear that he has restored is very fortunate, as his work is impeccable. The following restoration work was performed on this amp: Power supply rebuilt: – Original caps disconnected, but left in place – Voltage doubler caps mounted in existing side clip – Multi-section cap relocated to vertical terminal strip, original color code maintained – Diodes replaced with modern UF4007 – Added thermistor for inrush current limiting Bias Supply Rebuilt: – Replaced selenium rectifier with silicon diode – UF4007 – Double axial capacitor replaced with (2) single axial caps – Cleaned bias selector switch Signal Path Component Check: – Loaded in tubes for a base line test, post power supply rebuild – Both channels working normally – 2 of 4 screen grid resistors drifted. All 4 screen resistors replaced with 10% Carbon Comp (new production Kamaya) – 6.8 Ohm resistor on one tube socket drifted out of tolerance – replaced with period correct Allen Bradley carbon comp – Paper capacitors replaced. 022uF w/Polypropylene film caps – 15uF axial electrolytic caps replaced Final Testing and Alignment: – Retested after aging parts replaced – Set Bias and tested both channels to 40watts at 1% THD – Calibrated AC Balance at 35W output – Distortion less than. 05% at 10W – 1KHz into 8 ohm load – Set up for long term stress and listening tests – PASS The amp will be carefully packed in a heavy duty box, and surrounded on all sides with several inches of polystyrene foam. Water activated, fiber reinforced tape will be used on all box seams. We will then double box the amp, suspending the inner box within the outer for further protection. This unit is highly collectable, but it also needs to be uséd and enjoyed. The following restoration work was performed on this amp. Original caps disconnected, but left in place. Eico HF-81 Stereo tube integrated amplifier. All electrolytic and formed capacitors have been replaced with a mix of Solen, Orange drop and Panasonic capacitors. All front controls have been cleaned and treated with Deoxit products as well. The tubes in the unit have all been tested, Mullard Blackburn EL84 quad that test at 75% life for the output section. The preamp section consists of a mix of (2) Amperex Bugle Boys and Amperex branded globe tubes. Rectifiers are Mullard originals. The Front brass face plate was removed and stripped of the old yellowing clear coat, buffed out and coated with 3 coats of Carnauba wax. The unit underwent a 4 hour bench demonstration running through PSB monitor speakers. At this time all necessary adjustments were completed. A very musically pleasing amp that will definitively please the discerning listener when mated with a moderately efficient pair of speakers. Original owner/ service manual is included with the sale. The outside cabinet does show some signs of age discoloring of the bronze paint, but does not distract from the look of this historical amplifier. The HF-81 fed it all back to me-I heard the synergy, felt the music-just the way a single-ended amp delivers. It was amazing-and to ice the cake, the HF-81 didn’t soften the bass or roll off the top. It was as if I’d taken a Krell, a Spectral, and an Ongaku amp, put them all in that transporter pod in The Fly, then thrown the switch and opened the second pod and, presto -the HF-81. I unconditionally recommend that you find an EICO HF-81, restore it, and hear for yourself what the fuss is all about. McIntosh MC225 Vintage Tube Amplifier – Fully Restored. SkyFi Audio – Curators of Vintage Audio Gear. No mid-fi, no gimmicks, no junk. Each piece of equipment is cosmetically restored and fully tested in our well-equipped lab by an engineer with 30+ years of experience in the HiFi world. Through our sister company, which is an authorized dealer for McIntosh, Audio Research, Sonus Faber, ClearAudio, Project, and Sony ES, we have access to OEM parts, service, and support. Many audiophiles hail the McIntosh MC225 as the best sounding vintage tube amp from McIntosh ever. Especially if you have high efficiency speakers. We totally agree that if you don’t need the extra 40W or 50W from the MC240 or MC275, then this is your best choice. However, don’t be fooled into thinking an unrestored eBey special will perform to that level. This listing includes the MC225 amplifier, super nice tube cage, the original manual, and the repair receipts as shown in our photos. This amp was restored by the McIntosh experts at Audio Classics in 2005 and has since been in storage. Here are some details about the restoration work performed based on our review of the work itself, along with review of all the Audio Classics receipts. Power supply. All electrolytic cap cans replaced. Bias supply diode replaced. All paper caps replaced with PIO and Panasonic Film. Select resistors replaced in key circuit locations plate load, phase inverter balance, etc. Power cord replaced SkyFi Tube Notes: When this amplifier first arrived into the shop it was fitted with a set of miscellaneous tubes from several different manufacturers. During our initial testing we found that every tube tested strong. On bench testing, the differences did not seem to affect frequency response or channel balance in any measurable way. The SkyFi Testing Process for Tube Amplifiers. We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure that there are no signs of heat stress or damage. In addition to use as a stereo amplifier, the flexibility of the MC225 permits it to be uséd as a monophonic amplifier that delivers 50 watts, or as two separate 25 watt amplifiers with each channel amplifying completely separate pro- grams, or as two amplifiers for use with an electronic crossover network. Such flexibility permits maximum use for greatest return from your investment. Over one million watts of amplifier output power capacity have been manufactured by Mclntosh since 1947. In this 1,000,000 watts of audio power there are less than 10 watts of distortion capacity and less than 1/100 watt of noise capacity! The dramatic difference in the quality of music reproduction when you listen through Mclntosh instruments is directly due to low distortion performance. Careful, devoted research is a way of life at Mclntosh. The world’s finest amplifier is the creation of per- severing, resourceful Mclntosh engineers. This is quality American made hardware made before Lafayette went Japanese sourced. It features high-end audio design cues including output transformers heavy on the iron, four EL86 power output tubes rated 50 Watts from two channels, two 7199 tube gain stages and phase splitter, 12AX7 pre-amplifier stages, and a hum-free DC filament supply. This particular’Made In USA tube stereo amplifier was found unmodified from from its original design but badly in need of repair. An experienced electronic engineer repaired and corrected the electrical faults and replaced the defective circuit elements. This included replacing all electrolytic capacitors and critical high voltage coupling tone capacitors plus other out of tolerance components. All tubes were tested and the weak and defective ones were replaced. The balance and quiescent plate current for each of the push-pull outputs was then adjusted according to factory specs. All switches were cleaned with Deoxit D5 and pots cleaned and lubricated with Deoxit F5. Some panel knobs were replaced. A new power cord was installed with a polarized plug. The chassis, case and cover were dusted and cleaned to remove years of dirt and grime as best as possible and the front panel is amazingly crisp and markings brilliant considering it is nearly 65 years old. All this resulted in a Stereo amplifier that delivers great tube performance. The warm glow of the tube filaments and neon pilot lamp conjure thoughts of nostalgia and the sound is pure sonic joy. And don’t you just love the retro angled feet. It is ready to be your daily listen for hopefully another 65 years. Copy of original Lafayette Electronics User Instructions will be included.
